Year-End Career Check: Reviewing the Past Year’s Goals & Accomplishments

As the holidays approach, the end of the year often presents the ideal time for reflection and goal setting. There are ways to approach the goal-setting process which can result in better career outcomes in 2025, and ultimately, put you more in control of your future. As you review your past year’s career goals and make a plan for the new year, here are three key questions to ask yourself:

Did I reach any of my 2024 career goals?

Before setting new goals, it’s important to look back on your past progress. First, take an inventory of your 2024 goals and write down which goals you achieved. In some instances, a former goal may no longer be a priority. If there are any remaining goals that you still wish to accomplish, take note of those for the next step. Remember, even if you didn’t fully achieve a goal, you may have taken some meaningful action towards it. Any progress counts!

What do I value for my career in 2025?

As you start the process of establishing 2025 goals, it’s first paramount to think about what matters most to you for the new year. Rather than focus specifically on achievements within the workplace, think about what you’re hoping to get out of your career moving forward. For example, are you hoping to take on more responsibilities in your role? Do you want to engage in more professional development? While it’s perfectly understandable to want a promotion (such as a new title or pay increase), there are plenty of other factors to consider when formulating new career goals that align with your values.

Do I have job satisfaction?

In many ways, your level of job satisfaction can affect your performance and feelings toward your work. If you have minimal satisfaction with your current employment, you’ll likely feel less motivated to achieve future goals and continue advancing your career. There are many elements of job satisfaction, including contentment with both your position and home life. Even if you generally enjoy your job, feelings of burnout can lead to stagnation and resentment. It’s essential to assess your job satisfaction and take steps to improve your work experience, whether that means discussing concerns with your manager or seeking additional support in your department.

By asking yourself the questions above, you can ultimately be more mindful about how you review your past year’s career goals and accomplishments. This will be critical for making the most meaningful career moves in the new year.
