Three Questions to Ask Yourself BEFORE Quitting Your Healthcare Job
Ready to ditch your current healthcare job for something new? Not so fast! Before you start writing your resignation letter, it’s helpful to ask yourself a few key questions. By engaging in some honest reflection, you can feel more confident in your decision to either stay or quit your job. Here are three questions to ask yourself before quitting:
Are you reaching your career goals?
As you think about your employer and position, consider your career progress (or lack of progress) over the past several months or years. If you haven’t reached many of your goals, think deeply about why you’ve failed to progress. For example, have you felt stunted in your growth? Has a toxic workplace culture caused you added stress and anxiety? Do you feel a lack of professional support in your department? If you pinpoint that your employer is the root of poor career growth, this can signal that a job change is in order.
Can my issues be resolved?
If you have an issue (or multiple issues) at your organization that may have the potential to be resolved, it’s worth exploring this option before making the decision to quit. Whether it’s scheduling a meeting with your manager or filing a complaint with your facility’s HR department, taking the initiative to have your grievances addressed may result in a desirable outcome. However, if you’ve already pursued all avenues and still have not received any form of resolution, this is a clear sign it may be time to move on.
Has my quality of life been affected?
With job-related stress and burnout often being grounds for quitting, it’s important to do an honest assessment of your work-life balance. Are you struggling to maintain a healthy personal life? Are you constantly working overtime? Has your physical or mental health been compromised? If you’ve answered “yes” to most of these questions, your job may be to blame. Before quitting, consider speaking with your manager about your work-life balance concerns. By communicating your concerns, you may be able to determine the root cause of your stress and formulate a reasonable solution with your manager.
By asking yourself the above questions, you’ll feel more empowered to make the best career decision for yourself, personally and professionally.
